In 1996, Colorado Resorts Inc. opened up The Double Eagle Hotel & Casino on Bennett Ave. in the heart of downtown Cripple Creek. This was the first Vegas-style casino to open in this former mining town which meant a bigger game floor, more elaborate decoration, and exciting perks for guests.

However, things started slowing down in the casino industry by 1999 and Colorado Resorts Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They continued to operate the casino until 2006, when Colorado Resorts Inc. worked out a complicated deal with Southwest Casino Corporation to buy The Double Eagle.

The plans to buy The Double Eagle involved another company, Pinnacle Casino and Resorts LLC, buying all of the Colorado Resorts Inc stock. Then, Southwest Casino Corporation would buy The Double Eagle from Pinnacle for a little over $12.5 million. Pinnacle retained ownership of the building and Southwest Casino Corporation also signed a 30-year lease agreement on said building the casino was located in.
