Craps Rolling Dice Techniques

  1. One of the major rules of craps is the dice must be thrown so they hit the opposite wall and bounce off, otherwise you will have to rethrow. Casinos put triangle shaped pyramids or bumps on the walls to produce more randomness when the dice bounce off of them.
  2. Craps is a dice game that involves predicting the outcome of the roll of dice and betting on the same. Most casinos also allow players to roll the dice when it is their turn. A player can choose either to roll or to pass his move by offering the dice to the next player in the rotation.

For years, my favorite casino game was roulette, but then I went through a blackjack phase. Both games were fun, but I’ve left them behind in favor of my favorite casino game of all time – craps.

Touching the dice with two hands. It’s exciting shooting the dice, and if you’re a craps virgin, experienced players are going to love having you shoot the dice, too. Just make sure to only use one hand to shake or throw the dice. Using two hands makes the house nervous (as some cheaters try to switch the dice for loaded ones).

The game of craps doesn’t offer the best odds in the casino. That distinction belongs to blackjack (with video poker getting an honorable mention.)

Craps doesn’t have game-play decisions which challenge your mind, either. You also can’t win huge jackpots in a craps game.

What makes craps so special?

It’s the levels of excitement in the game.

If you want to improve in craps, here are seven tips that should take your game of dice to the next level.

1 – Stick With the Best Bets at the Craps Table

Craps has more bets available than most other games. And unlike many casino games, the house edge for those bets varies widely.

The house edge is just a way of measuring how much of an advantage the casino has over the player. The higher the house edge is, the more money you’ll lose on average over time.

The house edge for the most popular and easiest bet to play at the craps table is 1.41%, and that’s for the pass line bet.

The come bet works almost just like the pass line bet, and it also has a low 1.41% edge.

Techniques

Wrong bettors – players who bet against the shooter – have slightly better odds. The house edge for the don’t pass and don’t come bets is 1.36%, which is marginally better.

Those are the four best bets at the table:

  1. Pass
  2. Don’t pass
  3. Come
  4. Don’t come

The other bet you must know about is the odds bet. This is the best bet in the casino because it has no edge. It’s a break-even bet in the long run because the odds bet pays off at the same odds as you have of winning it.

To place an odds bet (or take an odds bet, if you’re a wrong bettor), the shooter must first make a point. You place your odds bet in addition to the pass or don’t pass bet that you already have in action.

I won’t go into a lot of details about how those bets work. You can find other pages on the site that explain how craps works in detail.

Just know for now that those are the bets you want to stick with.

2 – Avoid the Worst Bets at the Craps Table

In some games, like roulette, all the bets at the table have the same edge. It doesn’t matter if you bet on red or black or on a single number, the house’s advantage is the same.

But in craps, some bets are much worse than others.

I recommend staying away from all the bets besides the ones in the previous bullet points, but if you are going to branch out, at least stay away from the bets that the stickman is trying to convince you to place.

In many cases, the house edge on those bets is well into the double digits. You’d almost be better off playing keno than placing those bets.

These bets are called the “proposition bets,” and they’re all terrible. Most of the time, they’re one-roll bets, which means they’re resolved based on the outcome of the next roll of the dice.

For your own good, just skip those bets.

3 – Try to Keep Your Head

Craps is an exciting game that stimulates a lot of action, and it’s easy to wind up with a lot of action on the table at any time. You can also see huge winning streaks when a shooter gets hot.

The downside to this streakiness is that you can also see all those bets washed away with a single roll of the dice.

A lot of craps gamblers like to place a new bet every time the dice are rolled. Others like to have multiple numbers working at a given time, but they limit themselves to having three or four numbers working at once.

My favorite technique, though, and the one I recommend to you, is this:

  • Bet the pass line every time there’s a new come-out roll.
  • Place the odds bet when the shooter sets a point.
  • Wait until that series of rolls is completed before placing any additional bets.

Think of the house edge in a casino as being similar to compound interest. The more money you save in a bank account, the faster it grows.

Only the house edge in the casino is like compound interest in reverse. The more money you put into action, the more you lose – and faster.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and put too much money into action.

Keep your head, though, and keep your action reasonable even when it seems like you can’t lose.

4 – Don’t Bother With Foolish Betting Systems

Betting systems aren’t as popular in craps as in games like roulette, but they do get used sometimes.

What’s a betting system?

It’s a set of rules for raising and lowering the size of your bets based on what happened on your previous bets.

The classic example is the Martingale System, which is used on even-money bets. The idea with the Martingale is that you double the size of your bet after a losing bet. Eventually, with the bigger bets, you’ll win back what you’ve lost along with a profit.

The problem with these betting systems is that they don’t really change the math behind the game. The house still has a 1.41% edge, regardless of whether you bet $5, $10, or $20.

It can be fun to use some kind of betting system, and if it makes the game more interesting, indulge yourself.

Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that any betting system can overcome the house edge in the long run.

5 – Don’t Worry About “Rhythmic Rolling” or “Dice Control”

You’ll see people selling books and videos about how to control the dice, or set the dice, or how to roll the dice “rhythmically.”

You should save your money, and here’s why:

If such techniques really worked, the casino would institute countermeasures to stop them. Most casinos are comfortable with their existing countermeasures, which should tell you something right there.

Even if it were a possibility, most people aren’t talented enough to pull it off. And sometimes it doesn’t matter how much you practice. If you lack the talent for something, you just can’t make it happen.

Imagine being 5’1” and hoping to play professional basketball?

I don’t care how much you practice, your odds of succeeding in that quest are slim to none.

And to be confident that you were able to affect the outcome of a roll of the dice, you’d need records for thousands of practice throws.

Most people just aren’t dedicated enough to pull that off, but even if you are – even if you’re willing to build a craps table in your basement and practice for 10,000 hours – there’s no guarantee that you’ll succeed.

You’re better off learning to count cards in blackjack.

Or try poker.

Stick with craps for recreational play and look for other advantage play opportunities.

6 – Use Sound Money Management Techniques

You’ll see varying opinions about money management techniques in gambling. I’m a believer in money management, but not from the perspective that it will improve your odds of winning money. No amount of money management can help you with that.

But the principles behind money management are crucial for craps players. Yes, you should have a bankroll set aside specifically for playing craps.

You should have a clear goal for how much money you hope to win during a session.

You should also have a limit to how much you’re willing to lose when playing.

That might sound like common sense, but why is it so uncommon?

7 – Don’t Forget to Join the Player’s Club

Some people think that the player’s club is just for slots players. They don’t realize that your player’s club should also be used at the table games, too.

All you have to do is present your card to the dealer, and he’ll make a note of how much you’re betting and how many bets per hour you’re placing.

Your card will be credited accordingly, and you’ll get the comps that you’ve earned this way.

Conclusion

Those are my seven best tips for improving your craps game, but maybe I left something out? Or maybe you disagree with one of these tips?

If so, let’s talk about it. Leave a comment with your suggestions about how to win more often shooting dice.

Some Craps players claim they can affect the outcome of a dice throw by a technique known as Rhythm Rolling. If you can truly perfect this technique you'll be rich beyond your wildest dreams. Read on to find out more...

Craps players must 'shoot' the dice the length of a Craps table and off a textured backboard so that they rebound before coming to rest. These rules are meant to prevent controlled throws that change the odds of specific numbers being rolled. It would only take a slight change in these odds to tilt the bias of the game into the shooter's favour.

It is a fact that dice can be controlled in the private game, but under casino conditions it becomes a much more complex prospect.

Why Rhythm Rolling?

Players are said to develop a rhythm of holding and throwing the dice in the same set way, consistently. Hence the name Rhythm Rolling.

The Rhythm Rolling Technique

The essence of the technique is to give a false rattle of the dice using the Lock Grip, while holding specific numbers together using the Dice Setting technique, and to get the dice to spin like a wheel around one axis when travelling through the air to the backboard, and then not to let the dice turn on the other axis on the rebound. That's a pretty tall order.

This cartwheel motion of the dice will eliminate two sides of each die from landing face up and so totally changes the odds. If the dice are picked up and held in a Lock Grip then the sides of each dice facing each other and the two opposite sides can be prevented from coming up.

It would be a good idea to practice this in your own time. The technique of spinning the dice around one axis is definitely achievable. The rebound off the backboard is the problem. It is possible to purchase the back-rail material privately, and if you want to perfect this technique it would be a good idea to do this, so you can practice freely. If you can somehow get free access to a professional Craps table, even better. Either way, be prepared to spend some considerable time practising your shots before you try them out with real money.

Grips

There are many different 'grips' (ways to hold the two dice with your fingers), but the only ones you really need are the Lock GripandBlanket Roll Grip. You can find allsorts of other fancy grips described on Craps websites, with fancy sounding names and peculiar-looking finger positions that are all supposed to have their advantages, like reducing skin friction and so on. None of them are superior to the very natural looking and feeling Lock Grip and proven Blanket Roll Grip. These grips allow you to set the dice inconspicuously and then throw them with the spin you want, to prevent the outer/inner values landing face-up .

Release/Shooting/Throwing

Let the dice 'roll' from your hand as you toss them with the right force to just reach the back-rail. The dice should be already turning as you open your hand to release them and let them 'spin' through the air to the backboard. The essential skill is to keep your hand and the dice horizontal and parallel with the Craps table's top and not to have too much of a rebound.

Craps Rolling Dice Techniques For Beginners

When throwing the dice, lean over the front of the table as far as you can and reach your arm out to its full extent. This is to reduce the distance the dice travel through the air. Remember, the dice should fly to the backboard, don't let the dice bounce across the table. You want to develop your throwing technique so that the dice have enough momentum to hit the back-rail but not bounce back too hard.

If you know Craps odds, then you know the shooter has a 1.41% disadvantage. This means you only need to get around two controlled throws right out of about 100 to tilt the odds back into your favour. And of course, your going to have to make smart bets that don't have a significant House edge. See good Craps play for a guide to the kind of bets you should and shouldn't make.

Final Tips on Controlled Shooting

Make sure your hand is dry and not sweaty. You can keep some chalk dust discreetly in your pocket to ensure this. Keep your thumb out of the way of the dice when you release them. And try and make your throwing technique seem natural and not controlled. You won't be prosecuted for controlling dice throws, but a casino can refuse your custom if they want, and they may well do so if they think you are successfully influencing the dice. Lastly, remember to practice and practice until you're confident about your ability. Only then should you gamble your hard cash at the casino tables.

The 'Flying V' Dice Set

A commonly cited way to set the dice, when Rhythm Rolling or using the Blanket Roll, is to hold the two dice with the 3s facing-up and with the spots in a 'V' shape. This is supposed to reduce the chances of rolling a 7. Remember, you only want to do this after the come-out roll, when you are shooting for your point number. The 'V' shape is a very convenient way to remember the dice-set, but it is more properly described as holding one combination of either the 6 or 1 on one die facing a 5 or 2 on the other. You are much better off learning the full dice setting technique, which will mean setting the dice quicker, less conspicuously, and with the full range of sets at your disposal for different situations. See Dice Setting for full details.

Books and Seminars on Dice Setting and Rhythm Rolling

There is a small industry that has grown up around teaching controlled crapshooting to the inexperienced player, including whole books and seminars dedicated to explaining the 'secrets' of the Rhythm Rolling technique. All these commercial endeavours (because, of course, they charge a hefty price) are a waste of money. They will blind you with science, showing you mind-boggling, complex graphs and explaining percentages, spurious facts and dubious figures, ad-nauseum. Everything you need to know about dice setting and controlled shooting is explained on the dice-play website. Prove you can do it to yourself and don't take anyone else's advice, opinion or instruction on the subject. One piece of advice often given is, to bet on a shooter who is using the technique, who perhaps takes their time between shots, or who maybe tells you they can control the dice. The truth is, you have no idea whether they can control the dice or not. Practice shooting yourself and when YOU are confident with your own ability then place your money down on the table, but not before.

Money Making Craps Tables

Craps Rolling Dice Techniques Free

There were in the past some casinos that used Craps tables that had a textured back-lining that didn't cover the bottom inch or so of the rail. The textured rubber lining was short on height. This definitely makes it possible to control the throw and outcome of the dice using the Whip Shotand Greek Shot. Casino's that used such tables were without a doubt cheated by smart unscrupulous Craps players. But casinos got wise to this trick and made sure the backboards where fully covered by the contoured rubber back lining. If you can find a casino Craps table like this today, you are onto something special and have the golden opportunity to make a considerable sum of money.
